Q: How do you pick your outfits for the day? Do you plan in advance, or just wake up and see if inspiration strikes?

A: I have a bookmarked folder of outfits on Instagram and Pinterest that I save for rainy days where I’m not feeling inspired. Before the pandemic, when I was socializing and going out a bit more, I would literally go to bed dreaming about an outfit I wanted to wear the next day. Since I’ve been home a lot more — and we live in a colder climate — it’s been more about warmth & comfort (which is why I invest in designer coats more than I do anything else) — because if I’m wearing sweats, my checkered faux fur coat distracts from that and still makes me appear stylish!

Q: What are your favorite songs at the moment that get you hyped up and ready for the day?

A: I will probably sound like a crazy person, but I don’t do music in the morning! I have always been a senior citizen at heart, I prefer quietness, reading time, and coffee to jumpstart my day. I read news via The Skimm, have coffee, and try to read through a couple chapters of one of the 10 books I’m simultaneously reading before my son, Rowan, pulls me away for whatever “toy emergency” he has at the moment.

Q: What are some of your closet staples or basics that you rely on?

A: As I mentioned earlier, investing in fun, cool, one-of-a-kind coats is a MUST for me, especially having lived in Minnesota all my life. When the colder temps roll around, I get lazier with my outfits, but it doesn’t really matter as long as you have a fun coat on. Other staples:

  • boxy white tees that layer under anything (slip dresses/fancier clothing)

  • everyday jewelry you wear (layered necklaces, chunky earrings, rings)

  • shoes for every occasion! they tie your whole outfit together!

Q: Who are some of your fashion inspirations?

A: When I’m in a style slump, I look to Yara Shahidi, Kelly Wearstler, Marriane Theodorsen, Emili Sindlev, Kristen Grace Lam, Caroline Maguire, or Kimberly Drew — they cover every spectrum of the fashion scale: outrageous, colorful/individualistic, to laid back and classic!

Q: How can our fashion community support you?

A: I have fun styling reels for a local women’s boutique — Queenie & Pearl — so I’d love for you to support them if you haven’t already! They sell both new styles and vintage clothing — I’ve found so many designer vintage goodies here. Recently, I styled a music video for a local musician, Tearra Oso — and would love to do more of that kind of work to get back to my roots with styling opportunities and endeavors, so if you know someone that needs assistance in the styling department, send them my way!

Q: What’s next for Davee Ek?

A: Catch me on @queenieandpearlmn with How-To Styling Reels and on my own Instagram @youngbrokefabulous for everything from fashion, to emo Tumblr quotes, to words of inspiration!
